ACA/Marketplace FAQ

What is the ACA/Marketplace?

The ACA (Affordable Care Act) Marketplace is where individuals and families can enroll in health insurance that meets federal coverage standards.

These plans include essential benefits, protect people with pre-existing conditions, and may offer financial help based on income.

Who can enroll in a Marketplace plan?

You may qualify if you:

-Live in the United States

-Are a U.S. citizen or lawfully present immigrant

-Are not incarcerated

-Do not have affordable employer health coverage

When can I enroll?

Open Enrollment:
Usually November 1 through January 15 (dates can vary by state).

Special Enrollment Period (SEP):
You can enroll outside Open Enrollment if you have a qualifying life event, such as:

-Losing other health coverage

-Getting married or divorced

-Having or adopting a baby

-Moving to a new area

-Losing Medicaid

Most Special Enrollment Periods last 60 days from the event.

What counts as a qualifying life event?

Events like marriage, divorce, birth or adoption of a child, moving to a new ZIP code, loss of employer coverage, loss of Medicaid/CHIP eligibility, and certain changes in income that affect subsidy eligibility.

Can I get help paying for my ACA plan?

Yes. Based on your household income and family size, you may qualify for:

-Premium Tax Credits – Lower your monthly payment

-Cost-Sharing Reductions – Lower your deductible and copays (Silver plans only)

Your final subsidy amount is confirmed when you file your taxes.

Are pre-existing conditions covered?

Yes. ACA plans cannot deny coverage or charge more because of your health history.

What if my income changes during the year?

You should report income changes right away.

-If you earn more than expected, you may repay some subsidy.

-If you earn less, you may receive additional credit.

We help you estimate your income carefully to avoid surprises.

What do Bronze, Silver, and Gold mean?

These are coverage levels:

-Bronze: Lower monthly cost, higher out-of-pocket

-Silver: Balanced monthly cost and out-of-pocket

-Gold: Higher monthly cost, lower out-of-pocket

We compare total costs — not just the premium — so you can choose wisely.

Are prescriptions covered?

Yes. All ACA plans include prescription coverage.
Each plan has its own medication list, so we always check your prescriptions before enrolling.

Can I keep my doctor?

It depends on the plan’s network.
We verify your doctors and hospitals before enrollment.

Does ACA include dental and vision?

-Pediatric dental (under 19) is included.

-Adult dental and vision are usually separate plans.

What if I lose my job and health insurance?

Losing employer coverage qualifies you for a Special Enrollment Period.
You usually have 60 days to enroll.

Can I change plans during the year?

-During Open Enrollment: Usually January 1 (or the next month).

-During an SEP: Typically the first of the month after enrollment.

-Birth/adoption: May allow retroactive coverage to the date of the event.

Can I have Medicaid and an ACA plan at the same time?

No. If you qualify for Medicaid, you cannot receive ACA subsidies.
If you lose Medicaid, you qualify for a Special Enrollment Period.

Are ACA plans the same in every state?

No. Plans, pricing, and carriers vary by state and county.

How much do ACA plans cost without subsidies?

Costs vary based on age, location, and coverage level.
We compare all options so you can see the full picture before deciding.
